Q from Monthly Meeting. How often should I backup my computer? |
|
A. Harry: Backing up your computer is important and should be carried out regularly and part of your regular computer maintenance; once a week is a good idea. Hard disks can and do fail and everything stored on the disk will be lost including programs and data. Backing up saves all your data including files and folders, photographs, music etc to a CD or DVD or to separate external hard drive which is connected via a USB plug on your computer. If your hard drive subsequently fails you can restore all the backed up files onto a new hard drive. Note that program files e.g. MS Office are not backed up and users should ensure that they keep the original program installation disks (with their serial numbers) in a safe place so that they can be reinstalled if the hard drive fails.
